Annual Report, Executive Director 2011

Executive Director’s Annual Report 2011

Between crippling snowstorms, an earthquake, a hurricane, and another snowstorm, LION managed to accomplish a few things this year. We added the LEAP libraries – North Branford, North Haven, and West Haven. We completely changed our Public Catalog interface. And we committed to the new version of Innovative’s software – Sierra.

We adopted the latest version of Innovative’s “example sets” for our new catalog interface, and made many modifications to give the LION catalog a clean new look.  The result is quite pleasing and has received many positive comments.

We have signed an agreement with Innovative to become an “Early Implementer” of their Sierra architecture.  This will give us both a hardware and software upgrade at a significant discount.  We expect to be able to move to this new integrated library system in late 2012 after it has been fully tested and is in general release.

The Board committed to rapid growth of the eBook collection, and it has grown from 363 titles last December to 1884 titles. In September, Overdrive opened the eBook collection to the Amazon Kindle, which added a large number of potential patrons to our user base.  The eBook checkouts for the past year are over 26,000.  The audio downloads seem to have stabilized, and we had over 21000 checkouts in 2011.

We resumed the PC replacement program in FY2012.

A new fee structure which better reflects the current operations, simplifies the fee calculation and more fairly allocates the costs of operation was adopted this year.

For the fifth consecutive year the LION staff remained the same.

LION staff participated in RDA training in various forms. Andy attended an Innovative Workshop on OPAC Design. Andy and Karan gave training sessions on a variety of topics.

LION was represented at Innovative Public Libraries Directors Symposium, Innovative Public Library Consortia Conference,   Innovative Users Group, Connecticut Consortia Quarterly meetings, a Labor Law Seminar, and CT Technology Roundtables. The LION staff has driven over 19,000 miles to serve the member libraries.

Libraries Online continues with its strong financial position.

We have a few open inquiries from potential new members (Hamden, Old Saybrook, Groton/Waterford) which may move forward in 2012.

We will be implementing the Innovative Sierra system in 2012.

Libraries Online continues to offer an array of services to facilitate our members’ mission. Our solid and steady staff continues to serve the member libraries with distinction.
