PC Network Manager’s
Annual Report: 2008

2008 Summary:

  • We continued to maintain/upgrade existing computer hardware.  Within Lion there are more that 700 computers, various hardware, networks, and systems that we deal with.  In 2008, I completed over 310 work orders at the libraries.  The Wallingford and Guilford building projects required a great deal of time and effort this year.
  • Wallingford building project:   I worked in Wallingford for most of January/February.  I installed 49 new computers in the library.  I installed Vendprint’s PC reservation and print management systems in reference and children’s.  Many existing computers were redeployed and various other computer equipment was installed.  A group of ten older gateway computers were setup for a training room.
  • Guilford building project:  I worked at Guilford for the majority of August/September.  The library purchased 58 new computers that needed to be installed.  The library selected Envisionware for their PC reservation and print management system.  The Guilford Library generously donated a great deal of computer equipment they no longer had a need for.  Various LCD monitors, printers, network equipment, and thin clients were dispersed to Lion Libraries.
  • Lion is continuously in the process of purchasing and installing 76 new Dell Computers in the libraries every year.  Lion libraries bought an additional 145 computers this year.
  • Lion acquired a new member – Orange!  The July transition went smoothly.
  • Over 40 IBM computers were redeployed for public use or to replace older computers.  They were reloaded/imaged with the latest software and for consistency.
  • Linux Thin Client Systems:  I made several enhancements to the (3) systems in use (Rathbun, Blackstone, Essex).  Also, six additional thin clients were installed.
  • Public print management and reservation systems:  The Woodbridge and Wallingford libraries both use Vendprint’s PC reservation and print management software.  Guilford runs Envisionware and Old Lyme has TLM (time limit manager) by Fortres Grande.  PQM (print queue management) is in use a Blackstone.

2009 Plans:

For me, every day is a learning experience and I enjoy working with all the library staff.  Here are a few of the projects coming up in 2009:

  • Several libraries have expressed interest in PC reservation/print management systems for the public PC’s.  As libraries continue to add more computers and technology related services, the need for automated systems is definitely growing.
  • Our PC replacements for 2009 will continue to be broken down to monthly orders of 6 or 7 computers.

Respectfully Submitted,

Matt Beardsley, PC Network Manager
