2012 Annual Report


2012 Summary:

Currently, Lion supports over 800 computers, a wide array of library systems, and multiple networks. I completed 322 work orders onsite at the libraries this year. Library work orders can involve anything from 30 minutes to repair a PC, to 30 hours installing an entire system.

LION supports the computers and related equipment at 31 library buildings…

  • 380 staff computers – Lion’s PC replacement plan provides new staff computers annually. This ensures that staff will have high quality computers for Sierra use. Member libraries receive new computers based on their quantity of III/Sierra ports. Libraries may purchase additional computers thru Lion and we will install those as well. While installing new computers, we also fully reload and redeploy existing computers. This “computer shuffle” results in the oldest ones being retired.
  • 350 public internet computers – these PCs are potentially used by thousands of patrons every year. We consult with library staff to custom configure the patron computers for each library. The configurations are locked down for both patron privacy and to protect the integrity of the computer. LION schedules annual maintenance to update all software, including any reservation/print management systems in place. Staff requested changes and software upgrades are bundled together for efficiency, while critical issues and failures are attended to immediately.
  • 93 OPAC (catalog only PCs) – all are configured with the firefox web browser, locked down in a custom kiosk mode. This allows full catalog functionality, while blocking patrons from internet browsing.

We replaced our work order/inventory database server with the latest version in July. Currently, our database contains 769 computers inventoried out of the estimated 820. We are in the process of getting all computers listed accurately in the database.

We designed a new website for Lion over the summer. We converted all existing pages and the significantly improved site went live in October. The Lion server now hosts 16 library websites. I worked with Durham, Essex, and New London to implement their new sites.

2013 Plans:

We will continue to support the networks, systems, and hardware at the libraries. We will move forward with upgrades, new technology, and ideas. One project I have committed to is working towards supporting Apple computers for patron use.
