Libraries Online, Inc. (LION) launched Pika on Monday, 14 May 2018. Built on the foundation of Villanova University’s VuFind, Pika is a discovery layer developed by Colorado’s Marmot Library Consortium. In use in libraries and library consortia in Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, LION is Pika’s first New England partner.
Known for its clean, responsive design, Pika features record grouping, where multiple editions and formats display together in a single entry. Pika accommodates many third-party catalog enhancements, including Syndetics and Goodreads, and integrates digital content like Hoopla and Overdrive into its search functions. Pika also allows individual library digital collections to be visible only to its patrons.
LION, a consortium of 29 member libraries, selected Pika for its discovery layer in early 2017. The implementation began in January 2018, and the process has included training webinars for library staff, a site visit to the LION offices by key members of the Pika development team, and regularly progress reports to member libraries. As a result, the introduction of Pika to the LION community has gone smoothly, and patron response has been overwhelmingly positive.
