LUX Minutes 2012 09

Lux Committee Minutes 9/26/12

Overdrive Redesign
Alan demonstrated the latest version of the OD catalog. There are a number of small design changes in the works, especially to the color scheme and some of the link names. Alan will submit our revisions to Overdrive, and once the site is complete, we will select a launch date. The launch date will be at least a week in the future to allow libraries to train their staff and update their handouts.

The CLAMS consortium has a Sponsors page which groups titles by the donors who purchased them and puts a note into the item record. The committee agreed to recommend to the Lion Board that we add this page to our site, with the Board determining the policy for acceptance of donations.

For the next Lux meeting, we will decide which collections to have in the Featured Collections menu. These collections will be based on data available in the OD records, in order to facilitate automated creation and updates of the collections. We will change the lower 2 filmstrips on the home page quarterly and will decide on the schedule for 2013 at the December meeting.

Alan will determine the best way to let Overdrive know of any individual titles in need of subject heading revision.

The committee decided to increase the maximum number of checkouts and holds to 6, effective on the launch date. We also will offer 7, 10, or 14 day loan periods for both formats, with 14 being the default.

Overdrive Improvements
Overdrive has many improvements coming down the pike by year’s end.
• WIN has 3 components – advertisements, buy it now buttons with links to online retailers, and recommend buttons for titles we don’t own. The committee agreed to add the recommend button component as part of the Overdrive redesign.
• Overdrive Read – browser-based reading will eliminate the need for software like Adobe Digital Editions
• Media Console App will have dictionary and Wikipedia lookup
• Content Reserve (for materials selection) will be completely redesigned
• Media Station will allow ebooks as well as audiobooks
• In 2013, the library sites will be redesigned

Alan gave a quick overview of what to expect with Sierra and the upcoming downtimes. We will add a notice about the downtime to the home page of the pac.

LibraryThing Enhancements
Unfortunately, Alan was unable to do a full demo, because LibraryThing was having login issues. Alan will send out the information via the Lux list so everyone can test the enhancements. BookPsychic is a reader’s advisory tool and costs $1300 per year. Shelf Browse, their other enhancement, is not very feasible for us, because it requires a single call number per record. We will do a Survey Monkey poll in a few weeks about whether to recommend BookPsychic at the October Lion Board meeting.

Next Meeting
The next meeting will be held in December, exact date and location TBA.
